Training subsidies: get more out of your training budget

Training subsidies: get more out of your training budget

Training costs money. But not investing in training usually costs far more. Yet many companies in Belgium leave valuable training budgets unused. Not because they don’t want to invest in their people, but because the landscape of grants, sector funds and financial incentives feels like a maze with too many doors and too few signposts. The good news? You don’t have to find your way through it alone.

Train your team without paying the full bill

In Belgium, various funding schemes help make professional training more affordable. These include:

• The SME Portfolio (KMO-portefeuille) for small and medium-sized enterprises
• Sector funds such as Eloya, Volta, Embuild, Alimento, Educam, Mtech+, Cevora, and many more
• Winter training programmes through Constructiv, Embuild and Bouwunie
• Training grants available through joint sector committees

Together, these initiatives often reimburse a significant share of your training costs, provided the training strengthens the skills and competencies within your organisation.

And that's exactly the key: investing strategically in skills that make work safer, more efficient and ready for the future.

SME Portfolio: the most widely used lever

The SME Portfolio (KMO-portefeuille) is often the starting point for many companies. It provides financial support for training and consultancy that strengthens the quality of your organisation.

The SME Portfolio covers up to 30% of training costs and up to €7,500 per year, depending on the size of your company. Training in safety, technical skills and working at height often fits perfectly within this scheme.

The result: you spend less, while at the same time improving the quality of your people and processes.

Sector funds: money flowing back into your industry

Where the SME Portfolio is a general scheme, sector funds operate in a much more targeted way. Depending on the industry, companies can receive grants for training followed by their employees.

Some examples:

• Eloya (electrical engineering and related sectors)
• Volta (electrical engineering and related sectors)
• Embuild (construction and real estate sector)
• Alimento (food industry)
• Educam (garage, metalworking and bodywork sector)
• Mtech+ (metal and technology sector)
• Cevora (office and administrative staff sector)
• Constructiv (construction sector)

The logic is simple: sectors jointly invest in better-trained employees, because it strengthens the entire industry.

Winter training programmes and temporary additional support

From 1 December to 31 March, additional training opportunities and grants are made available for the construction sector.

This is no coincidence. It is a way to use quieter working periods to upskill teams.

Well-planned training means fewer productivity losses during peak periods and higher employability afterwards. These schemes can be applied for via Constructiv, your local Embuild or Bouwunie.

Why this is about more than just finances

At first glance, subsidies may look like a purely financial advantage. In reality, they are about something else:

• Fewer accidents
• Better preparation
• Less downtime on site
• Greater confidence in the workplace
• Higher execution quality

Or, put more simply: people who know what they’re doing make fewer mistakes when it really matters.

The role of Heli Safety Academy

Within this landscape, Heli Safety Academy acts both as a guide and an executor.

Not only by providing training in areas such as working at height, lifting and hoisting equipment, or fall protection, but also by supporting companies with subsidy applications.

The goal is not just to train. The goal is to make training possible.

In conclusion

Behind every training journey lies an ecosystem of sector funds, employers’ organisations, educational institutions, training partners and quality labels that help clear the path.

From funding and support to subject-matter expertise and recognition, this network does more than make learning possible — it strengthens it.
